The history of Freixenet dates back to 1861 when the company was founded by Pedro Ferrer Bosch. The company's name, Freixenet, is derived from La Freixeneda, the family estate of Ferrer's wife, Dolores Sala Vivé. The estate's name translates to "ash tree grove" in Catalan.

Freixenet is best known for its Cava, a sparkling wine produced in the traditional method. The company uses a blend of three grape varieties: Macabeo, Parellada, and Xarel·lo. The wine is aged in the bottle for a minimum of 9 months, resulting in a crisp, refreshing taste with fine bubbles.
