Fresno is a city located in Central Valley of California, United States. It is the county seat of Fresno County and is one of the largest cities in the state. Fresno serves as the economic hub of Fresno County and the surrounding areas in the Central Valley, which are primarily engaged in large-scale agricultural production.

Fresno was founded in 1872 by the Central Pacific Railroad Company and was named after the Spanish word for 'ash tree', referring to the abundant ash trees lining the San Joaquin River. The city was incorporated in 1885 and experienced significant growth due to its strategic location, serving as a railroad and later highway center.
