Gary Taubes
Gary Taubes is an American science writer, journalist, and author of several books, including Good Calories, Bad Calories (2007), Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It (2010), and The Case Against Sugar (2016). He is a co-founder of the non-profit organization Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI).
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Taubes was born in Rochester, New York. He studied applied physics at Harvard University (BS, 1977) and aerospace engineering at Stanford University (MS, 1978). Later, he received a master's degree in journalism at Columbia University in 1981.
Career[edit | edit source]
Taubes began his journalism career as a reporter for Discover magazine in 1982. He has written numerous articles for the Science Magazine, The Atlantic, and The New York Times Magazine.
In his books, Taubes argues that the mainstream dietary advice is based on inconclusive science and that the real cause of obesity is an excessive consumption of carbohydrates, not a surplus of calories. His work has been both praised and criticized by the scientific community.
