George Timothy Clooney (born May 6, 1961) is an American actor and filmmaker. He is the recipient of numerous accolades, including a British Academy Film Award, four Golden Globe Awards, and two Academy Awards, one for his acting and the other as a producer.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Clooney was born on May 6, 1961, in Lexington, Kentucky, to Nick Clooney, a former television host, and Nina Bruce, a former beauty queen. He is of Irish, German, and English ancestry. Clooney was raised in a Roman Catholic family but has said he does not know if he believes in God.

Career[edit | edit source]

Early work[edit | edit source]

Clooney's first major role was on the sitcom The Facts of Life from 1985 to 1987. He gained wide recognition for his role as Dr. Doug Ross on the medical drama ER from 1994 to 1999, for which he received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

Film career[edit | edit source]

Clooney made his directorial debut with the film Confessions of a Dangerous Mind in 2002. He has since directed and starred in several films, including Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), The Ides of March (2011), and The Monuments Men (2014). Clooney's notable acting roles include Ocean's Eleven (2001) and its sequels, Syriana (2005), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and Up in the Air (2009).

Humanitarian work[edit | edit source]

Clooney is known for his humanitarian efforts, particularly in relation to the Darfur conflict. He co-founded the Not On Our Watch Project, an organization that focuses on preventing mass atrocities.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Clooney was married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993. In 2014, he married Amal Alamuddin, a British-Lebanese barrister. The couple has twins, a son and a daughter, born in 2017.
