George Yancopoulos
George D. Yancopoulos is an American biotechnology executive and scientist. He is the co-founder, President, and Chief Scientific Officer of Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, a leading biotechnology company known for its development of innovative medicines.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
George Yancopoulos was born in New York City. He attended the Bronx High School of Science, where he developed an early interest in science. Yancopoulos earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry and molecular biophysics from Columbia University. He continued his education at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he received his M.D. and Ph.D. in molecular immunology.
Career[edit | edit source]
After completing his education, Yancopoulos joined the faculty at Columbia University as an assistant professor. In 1989, he co-founded Regeneron Pharmaceuticals with Leonard Schleifer. At Regeneron, Yancopoulos has been instrumental in the development of several important drugs, including Eylea (aflibercept), Dupixent (dupilumab), and Libtayo (cemiplimab).
Yancopoulos is known for his work in genetics and molecular biology. He has published numerous scientific papers and holds several patents. His research has significantly contributed to the understanding of cytokines and their role in immune responses.

George Yancopoulos has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to science and medicine. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2016, he was inducted into the Biotechnology Hall of Fame.
