Giovanna Tosato
Giovanna Tosato is a renowned oncologist and researcher in the field of medicine. She is best known for her significant contributions to the understanding and treatment of cancer, particularly multiple myeloma and other hematologic malignancies.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Giovanna Tosato was born and raised in Italy. She pursued her medical education at the University of Padua, one of the world's oldest surviving universities. After completing her medical degree, she moved to the United States for her postgraduate training.
Career[edit | edit source]
Tosato joined the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, Maryland, where she has spent the majority of her career. At NCI, she has held several key positions, including Chief of the Hematology Branch and Head of the Vascular Biology Section. Her research primarily focuses on the role of angiogenesis in cancer progression and the development of therapeutic strategies to inhibit this process.
Research and Contributions[edit | edit source]
Tosato's research has significantly advanced our understanding of the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in cancer. Her work has demonstrated that VEGF is not only a potent stimulator of angiogenesis but also plays a critical role in the survival and proliferation of cancer cells. This has led to the development of several anti-angiogenic therapies for the treatment of cancer.
In addition to her work on VEGF, Tosato has also made significant contributions to the field of hematologic malignancies. She has conducted extensive research on multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, and has developed novel therapeutic strategies for its treatment.
Honors and Awards[edit | edit source]
Throughout her career, Tosato has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to the field of oncology. These include the American Association for Cancer Research's Outstanding Investigator Award and the National Institutes of Health's Merit Award.
