Glomangioma

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Glomangioma is a rare, benign vascular tumor that originates from the glomus body, a thermoregulatory shunt concentrated in the fingers and toes. It is a subtype of glomus tumor, which is a type of perivascular tumor.

Symptoms and Signs[edit | edit source]

Glomangiomas are typically painful and sensitive to temperature changes. They are usually small, blue-purple nodules that can occur anywhere on the body, but are most commonly found on the extremities, particularly the hands and feet.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

The diagnosis of glomangioma is usually made based on the clinical presentation and confirmed by histopathological examination. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound can also be used to identify and characterize these tumors.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for glomangioma typically involves surgical excision. In some cases, radiotherapy or embolization may be used.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for glomangioma is generally good, as these tumors are benign and do not metastasize. However, they can cause significant discomfort and functional impairment, particularly if they are located on the fingers or toes.
