Gonadotropin preparation
Gonadotropin preparations are pharmaceutical formulations containing gonadotropins, which are a group of hormones that play a crucial role in the regulation of the reproductive system. These preparations are used in the treatment of various fertility issues in both men and women. Gonadotropins include hormones such as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
Types of Gonadotropin Preparations[edit | edit source]
Gonadotropin preparations can be derived from human sources or produced recombinantly. The main types include:
- Human Menopausal Gonadotropin (hMG): A mixture of FSH and LH extracted from the urine of postmenopausal women. It is used to induce ovulation in women and to increase sperm production in men.
- Recombinant FSH (rFSH): Produced through recombinant DNA technology, this preparation contains only FSH and is used primarily in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) like in vitro fertilization (IVF).
- Recombinant LH (rLH): Similar to rFSH but contains LH. It is used in combination with rFSH in cases where LH activity is also needed.
- Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG): Extracted from the urine of pregnant women or produced recombinantly. hCG mimics the action of LH and is used to trigger ovulation in women undergoing fertility treatments and to treat certain testicular disorders in men.
Indications[edit | edit source]
Gonadotropin preparations are indicated for use in:
- Women with ovulation disorders
- Men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism
- Assisted reproductive technologies (ART), such as IVF
- Cases of unexplained infertility
Administration[edit | edit source]
Gonadotropin preparations are administered through injections. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the individual's condition, the specific gonadotropin preparation used, and the treatment protocol.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects of gonadotropin therapy include:
- Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)
- Multiple pregnancies
- Injection site reactions
- Headaches and mood swings
