Government Doon Medical College
Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) is a premier medical education institution located in Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand, India. Established in 1935 as Doon Hospital and later upgraded to a medical college in 2016, it has grown into a significant center for medical education and healthcare services in the region. The college is affiliated with Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University and is recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
History[edit | edit source]
The foundation of Government Doon Medical College traces back to the establishment of Doon Hospital in 1935. Over the decades, the hospital served as a primary healthcare center for the residents of Dehradun and surrounding areas. Recognizing the need for advanced medical education and research in the region, the government decided to upgrade the hospital into a full-fledged medical college. The transition to Government Doon Medical College was completed in 2016, marking a significant milestone in the healthcare and educational landscape of Uttarakhand.
Campus[edit | edit source]
The GDMC campus is situated in the heart of Dehradun, surrounded by lush greenery and the picturesque landscape of the Himalayas. The campus houses state-of-the-art facilities, including modern classrooms, laboratories, a library with a vast collection of medical books and journals, and separate hostels for boys and girls. The attached teaching hospital, Doon Hospital, is equipped with advanced medical technologies and offers a wide range of healthcare services to patients.
Academics[edit | edit source]
Government Doon Medical College offers undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate (MD/MS) programs in various medical specialties. The MBBS program has an intake capacity of 150 students per year, providing them with comprehensive education and hands-on training in medical sciences. The postgraduate programs are designed to offer specialized training in fields such as General Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, and more.
Admission[edit | edit source]
Admission to the MBBS program at GDMC is based on the candidate's performance in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). For postgraduate programs, candidates must clear the NEET-PG examination. The selection process is highly competitive, ensuring that only the most meritorious students are admitted to the college.

The library at GDMC is a resource center for medical students, researchers, and faculty, offering access to a wide range of medical literature. The college also has well-equipped laboratories for teaching and research in various medical and allied health sciences.
The attached Doon Hospital serves as a teaching hospital for GDMC students, providing them with practical exposure to patient care, surgery, and other medical procedures. The hospital offers a wide range of medical services, including emergency care, in-patient and out-patient services, surgical services, and diagnostic services.

The college and hospital staff work closely with local communities to improve healthcare access and awareness, particularly in rural and underserved areas of Uttarakhand.
Challenges and Future Directions[edit | edit source]
Like many government-run institutions, GDMC faces challenges such as funding constraints and the need for continuous infrastructure and technology upgrades. However, the college is committed to overcoming these challenges through government support, public-private partnerships, and alumni contributions. Future plans include expanding academic programs, enhancing research capabilities, and upgrading medical facilities to provide state-of-the-art healthcare services.
