- Greenfield was founded by General Duncan McArthur, a prominent Ohio politician and military officer during the War of 1812. The city was named after Greenfield, Massachusetts, the hometown of one of its early settlers.

- Greenfield is located in the southern part of Ohio. It is approximately 70 miles east of Cincinnati and 60 miles south of Columbus. The city covers an area of 2.1 square miles.
