HIVEP1

HIVEP1 (Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type I Enhancer Binding Protein 1) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the HIVEP1 gene. This protein is a member of the zinc finger family of DNA-binding proteins and is involved in many cellular processes, including cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis.

HIVEP1 is a transcription factor that binds to the enhancer region of the HIV-1 virus, hence its name. It is involved in the regulation of gene expression, particularly in the immune system. The protein contains multiple zinc finger domains, which are responsible for its DNA-binding activity.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Mutations in the HIVEP1 gene have been associated with a range of medical conditions. These include intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, and developmental delay. The exact mechanisms by which these mutations cause disease are not fully understood, but it is thought that they disrupt the normal function of the HIVEP1 protein, leading to abnormal gene regulation.
