HLA-B18

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

HLA-B18 is a human leukocyte antigen serotype within the HLA-B serotype group. The serotype is determined by the antibody recognition of the B18 epitope. B18 is a split antigen of the Broad antigen, B12, and is a broad antigen. B18 is more common in people from the Iberian Peninsula, Basques, and Sardinians.

Function[edit | edit source]

HLA-B is a part of the MHC Class I molecules, which are present on all nucleated cells. The primary function of these molecules is to display fragments of proteins from within the cell to T-cells; a process crucial for the immune system's recognition of virally infected cells or cells that have become cancerous.

Disease association[edit | edit source]

HLA-B18 has been associated with a number of diseases. These include psoriasis, Behcet's disease, and autoimmune hepatitis. It is also associated with a slower progression of HIV infection.

Distribution[edit | edit source]

HLA-B18 is found at highest frequencies in the Iberian Peninsula, Basques, and Sardinians. It is also found at lower frequencies in other populations.
