HLA-DR18

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

HLA-DR18 is a human leukocyte antigen serotype within the HLA-DR serotype group. The serotype is determined by the antibody recognition of β18 subset of DR β-chains. The β-chain of HLA-DR is a polymorphic gene product; 9 of these β-chains are used in constructing the serological definition of HLA-DR. HLA-DR18 and HLA-DR52 are almost synonymous in meaning. HLA-DR18 is more common in individuals with autoimmune diseases and certain cancer types.

Function[edit | edit source]

HLA-DR is a cell surface receptor essential for cell-mediated immune response. It is expressed in antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and is responsible for presenting peptides derived from extracellular proteins. Variations in the HLA-DR genes linked to differences in immune response to pathogens.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

HLA-DR18 has been associated with a number of autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and multiple sclerosis. It is also associated with certain types of cancer, including melanoma and leukemia.
