Hammels is a neighborhood in the Rockaway Peninsula in the New York City borough of Queens. It is part of the larger area known as Rockaway Beach. Hammels is bordered by Arverne to the east and Seaside to the west. The neighborhood is primarily residential and is known for its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the Rockaway Beach and Boardwalk.

Hammels was originally developed in the late 19th century as a summer resort community. The area was named after Louis Hammel, a prominent developer who built the Hammel's Hotel in the 1870s. The hotel became a popular destination for vacationers from Manhattan and other parts of New York City. The neighborhood grew rapidly with the extension of the Long Island Rail Road to the Rockaways in the early 20th century.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Hammels is situated on the Rockaway Peninsula, which is a barrier peninsula located in the southern part of Queens. The neighborhood is characterized by its sandy beaches and coastal environment. The Rockaway Freeway and Rockaway Beach Boulevard are the main thoroughfares that run through Hammels.

The population of Hammels is diverse, with a mix of different ethnic and socioeconomic groups. The neighborhood has a significant number of public housing developments, including the Hammel Houses, which are managed by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Hammels is served by several modes of transportation. The New York City Subway's IND Rockaway Line (A train) has a station at Beach 67th Street, providing residents with access to other parts of Queens and Manhattan. The neighborhood is also served by multiple MTA bus routes.

Hammels is part of the New York City Department of Education's District 27. The neighborhood has several public schools, including P.S. 183 Dr. Richard R. Green School and M.S. 53 Brian Piccolo School.

Parks and Recreation[edit | edit source]

The neighborhood is adjacent to the Rockaway Beach and Boardwalk, which offers residents and visitors access to the beach, recreational facilities, and various events throughout the year. The boardwalk is a popular destination for activities such as swimming, surfing, and fishing.
