Founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1927 by Gerald Gidwitz and Louis Stein, the company initially started as the National Mineral Company, focusing on a single product, a machineless permanent wave for hair. The company was renamed Helene Curtis in 1935, a combination of Helen of Troy and Curtis for the then-popular movie star Tony Curtis, to better reflect its expanded focus on beauty products.
