Helms Bakery
Helms Bakery was a major bakery in Southern California, United States, which operated from 1931 to 1969. The bakery was known for its home delivery service, which operated using a fleet of distinctive yellow delivery trucks.
History[edit | edit source]
Helms Bakery was founded by Paul Helms, a businessman from New York City, who moved to Los Angeles in the early 20th century. The bakery was established in 1931 in Culver City, California, and quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality baked goods.
During the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Helms Bakery was selected as the official bread supplier for the athletes, which helped to further boost its reputation.
In the 1940s and 1950s, Helms Bakery expanded its operations, opening several new bakeries and introducing a range of new products. However, by the late 1960s, the bakery was facing financial difficulties, and it ceased operations in 1969.
Delivery Service[edit | edit source]
One of the distinctive features of Helms Bakery was its home delivery service. The bakery operated a fleet of yellow delivery trucks, which would drive through neighborhoods and deliver fresh bread and other baked goods directly to customers' homes. The trucks were equipped with a distinctive whistle, which would alert customers to their presence.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Despite its closure, Helms Bakery has left a lasting legacy in Southern California. The bakery's former headquarters in Culver City is now a historic landmark, and several businesses in the area have taken the Helms name in tribute to the bakery.
In 2014, a food truck named the "Helms Bakery Truck" was launched in Los Angeles, offering a range of baked goods inspired by the original Helms Bakery.
