Henry Muchmore Shaw




Henry Marchmore Shaw (November 20, 1819 – February 1, 1864) was an American physician and politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from North Carolina's 1st district. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Henry M. Shaw was born in Newport, Rhode Island on November 20, 1819. He pursued classical studies and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in medicine. After completing his education, Shaw moved to Indiantown, North Carolina, where he began practicing as a physician.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Shaw entered politics as a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives and served one term from March 4, 1853, to March 3, 1855, representing North Carolina's 1st district. During his tenure, Shaw focused on issues pertinent to his constituents and supported the party's platform.

Civil War and death[edit | edit source]

With the outbreak of the American Civil War, Shaw joined the Confederate States Army and served as a colonel. He was involved in several military engagements until his death on February 1, 1864, in Currituck County, North Carolina.
