Hershey's
Hershey's is an American company and one of the largest chocolate manufacturers in the world. Its headquarters are located in Hershey, Pennsylvania, a town permeated by the aroma of cocoa on some days, and where streetlights are shaped like Hershey's Kisses. The company was founded by Milton S. Hershey in 1894 as the Hershey Chocolate Company, a subsidiary of his Lancaster Caramel Company.
History[edit | edit source]
Milton S. Hershey founded the Hershey Chocolate Company in 1894 during the economic boom years of the Gilded Age. Hershey initially found great success in the caramel business, but after witnessing the chocolate-making process at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, he became fascinated with chocolate. He sold his caramel company in 1900 and focused on producing a chocolate bar affordable to the masses: the Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar.
Products[edit | edit source]
Hershey's product line includes some of the most recognizable chocolate and candy brands in the world. These include the flagship Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar, Hershey's Kisses, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Kit Kat, Twizzlers, and Jolly Rancher. Hershey's also produces baking products, such as Hershey's Cocoa and Hershey's Syrup, and a line of Hershey's Ice Cream products.
Hershey's and Society[edit | edit source]
Hershey's has had a significant impact on American society. The company played a role in the American Industrial Revolution with its mass production of chocolate. During World War II, Hershey's produced a specially designed bar for the U.S. Army, known as the Ration D Bar, which could withstand extreme temperatures. The company also has a history of philanthropy, with the establishment of the Milton Hershey School for disadvantaged children.
