Histotripsy

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Histotripsy is a non-invasive medical procedure that uses ultrasound waves to break down tissue. The term "histotripsy" comes from the Greek words "histo" meaning tissue, and "tripsy" meaning to break down. This procedure is often used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, kidney stones, and tumors.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

Histotripsy involves the use of a device that generates ultrasound waves. These waves are focused on a specific area of the body, causing the tissue in that area to break down. The broken-down tissue is then naturally eliminated by the body. The procedure is non-invasive, meaning it does not require any incisions or injections.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Histotripsy has been used in the treatment of various medical conditions. These include:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia: This is a condition in which the prostate gland becomes enlarged, causing problems with urination. Histotripsy can be used to break down the excess prostate tissue, relieving the symptoms.
  • Kidney stones: Histotripsy can be used to break down kidney stones, allowing them to be passed out of the body more easily.
  • Tumors: Histotripsy can be used to break down tumors, both benign and malignant. This can be a useful treatment option for patients who are not suitable candidates for surgery.

Benefits and Risks[edit | edit source]

The main benefit of histotripsy is that it is non-invasive, reducing the risk of complications associated with surgery such as infection or bleeding. It also typically involves a shorter recovery time compared to surgical procedures.

However, like all medical procedures, histotripsy carries some risks. These may include pain, swelling, and bruising at the treatment site. There is also a small risk of damage to surrounding tissues.

Future Research[edit | edit source]

Research is ongoing into the potential applications of histotripsy. This includes its use in the treatment of other conditions such as liver disease and pancreatic cancer.
