Human Brain Development Timeline

The Human Brain Development Timeline refers to the chronological sequence of events and stages that occur during the growth and maturation of the human brain. This process begins in the embryo and continues through to adulthood.

Embryonic Development[edit | edit source]

Embryonic development of the human brain begins at the third week of gestation with the formation of the neural tube. By the end of the fourth week, the three primary brain vesicles: the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain, have formed.

Fetal Development[edit | edit source]

During the fetal stage, the brain undergoes significant growth and differentiation. The cerebral cortex, responsible for higher cognitive functions, begins to develop by the eighth week. By the end of the second trimester, the brain has a structure similar to that of a newborn.

Postnatal Development[edit | edit source]

Postnatal development of the human brain continues well into adulthood. The first two years of life are particularly critical, with the brain reaching about 80% of its adult size. During this period, neurogenesis (the formation of new neurons) and synaptogenesis (the formation of synapses between neurons) occur at a rapid pace.

Factors Influencing Brain Development[edit | edit source]

Various factors can influence the development of the human brain. These include genetics, nutrition, environmental factors, and social interaction. Disruptions in any of these areas can lead to developmental disorders such as autism and ADHD.
