The university is named after Wilhelm and his brother, the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt. Humboldt University has been associated with 57 Nobel Prize laureates and is recognized for its emphasis on the Humboldtian model of higher education, which promotes the unity of teaching and research aimed at fostering critical thinking and academic freedom.

Since the reunification of Germany, Humboldt University has sought to reclaim its status as a leading institution for research and education, emphasizing interdisciplinary studies and international cooperation.
