Hypertrichosis brachydactyly obesity and mental retardation

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Hypertrichosis brachydactyly obesity and mental retardation (HBOMR) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the presence of excessive body hair (hypertrichosis), short fingers and toes (brachydactyly), obesity, and intellectual disability. This condition is part of a group of disorders known as congenital anomalies that are present at birth and affect various parts of the body.

Symptoms and Characteristics[edit | edit source]

The primary features of HBOMR include:

  • Hypertrichosis: An abnormal amount of hair growth over the body.
  • Brachydactyly: A condition where the fingers and toes are unusually short.
  • Obesity: Excessive fat accumulation in the body that may impair health.
  • Intellectual disability: Below-average intellectual function that affects learning, problem-solving, and daily living skills.

Patients with HBOMR may also exhibit other symptoms and physical anomalies, which can vary significantly among individuals. These may include facial dysmorphisms, dental anomalies, and developmental delays.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of HBOMR is currently unknown. It is believed to be a genetic condition that follows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. This means that an individual must inherit two copies of the mutated gene, one from each parent, to be affected by the disorder. Researchers are still working to identify the specific gene(s) involved.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of HBOMR is based on the clinical presentation of the four main features (hypertrichosis, brachydactyly, obesity, and intellectual disability) and may be supported by genetic testing. However, due to the rarity of the condition and the lack of specific genetic markers identified, diagnosis can be challenging.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

There is no cure for HBOMR, and treatment focuses on managing the symptoms and improving the quality of life for affected individuals. This may include:

  • Weight management: To address obesity and related health issues.
  • Educational support: Tailored learning programs to help with intellectual disability.
  • Physical therapy: To improve mobility and physical function.
  • Medical care: For associated health issues, such as dental anomalies or other physical conditions.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for individuals with HBOMR varies depending on the severity of the symptoms and the presence of associated health issues. With appropriate management and support, individuals with HBOMR can lead fulfilling lives.
