IFNA13

IFNA13 is a gene that in humans encodes the alpha 13 subunit of interferon (IFN). Interferons are proteins released by host cells in response to the presence of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, and also tumor cells. The gene is located on chromosome 9.

Function[edit | edit source]

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the Interferon family, which are cytokines that have antiviral effects and inhibit tumor cell growth. The IFNA13 gene is produced by leukocytes and plays a key role in the immune response against viral infections.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Alterations in the IFNA13 gene have been associated with increased susceptibility to viral infections and certain types of cancer. However, more research is needed to fully understand the role of this gene in disease development and progression.
