Incrocio Manzoni
Incrocio Manzoni is a family of grape varieties that were created in the 1920s and 1930s by Professor Luigi Manzoni of Italy's oldest school of oenology located in Conegliano, in the Veneto region. The varieties within the Incrocio Manzoni family are the result of complex crosses of various grape varieties including both Vitis vinifera species and American hybrid grapes.
History[edit | edit source]
The term "Incrocio" is Italian for "crossing" with the grape varieties collectively known as "Manzoni's crossings". The most notable and widely planted of the Incrocio Manzoni family is Incrocio Manzoni 6.0.13, a crossing of Riesling and Pinot blanc that Professor Manzoni was particularly fond of and today is found throughout the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia wine regions.
Varieties[edit | edit source]
There are several varieties within the Incrocio Manzoni family, each with its own unique characteristics and flavor profiles. These include:
- Incrocio Manzoni 2.15: A cross between Pinot noir and Chardonnay, this variety is used to produce white wines with a delicate, fruity aroma.
- Incrocio Manzoni 6.0.13: This is the most famous of the Incrocio Manzoni varieties. It is a cross between Riesling and Pinot blanc and is known for its high acidity and floral, citrusy aroma.
- Incrocio Manzoni 13.0.25: A cross between Prosecco and Cabernet Sauvignon, this variety is used to produce red wines with a robust, full-bodied flavor.
Viticulture and winemaking[edit | edit source]
The Incrocio Manzoni grapes are typically harvested in late September to early October. The winemaking process involves a combination of traditional and modern techniques. The grapes are usually fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to preserve the fruit's natural flavors. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for a period of time to add complexity and depth of flavor.
In popular culture[edit | edit source]
Incrocio Manzoni wines have been featured in various forms of media, including films, books, and television shows, further increasing their popularity and recognition worldwide.
