Indian Christians
Indian Christians are a religious minority in India, representing approximately 2.3% of the country's population. They are a diverse community, comprising various denominations and traditions including the ancient Saint Thomas Christians, also known as Nasranis, and the newer Protestant and Roman Catholic communities.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of Christianity in India is complex and reflects the country's multicultural fabric. The Saint Thomas Christians believe that Christianity was introduced to India by Thomas the Apostle in the 1st century AD. This tradition is supported by ancient writings and local folklore.
In the 16th century, the arrival of European colonizers, particularly the Portuguese, led to the establishment of Roman Catholicism in India. The Goan Inquisition was a notable event during this period. Later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, Protestant missionaries from Britain and America established their own communities.
Denominations[edit | edit source]
Indian Christians belong to a number of different denominations. The largest of these are the Roman Catholic Church in India, the Church of South India (CSI), and the Church of North India (CNI). Other significant groups include the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church, and various Protestant denominations.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Indian Christians have developed unique cultural practices that blend Christian traditions with Indian culture. This includes the use of Indian musical instruments in church services, the celebration of traditional Indian festivals with Christian significance, and the incorporation of Indian elements in Christian art and architecture.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
Indian Christians are spread across the country but are concentrated in the states of Kerala, Goa, and Tamil Nadu. They also form significant populations in the North-Eastern states and major cities like Mumbai and Bangalore.
