Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India and the seventh most populous city in the world. Mumbai is located on the western coast of India and has a deep natural harbour.

Mumbai's history dates back to the Stone Age, with evidence of habitation found on the island now known as Elephanta Island. The city's modern history begins with the Sultanate of Gujarat, who ceded it to the Portuguese Empire in 1534. The islands were later leased to the British East India Company in 1661, and it was during British rule that the city grew in importance as a trading hub.

Mumbai is located on a narrow peninsula on the west coast of India, facing the Arabian Sea. The city is built on a series of seven islands, which were united through land reclamation projects in the 18th and 19th centuries. Mumbai's geography is characterized by its coastal location, tropical climate, and the presence of several protected bays and natural harbours.

Mumbai is the financial, commercial, and entertainment capital of India. It houses important financial institutions such as the Reserve Bank of India, the Bombay Stock Exchange, and the corporate headquarters of numerous Indian companies. Mumbai's economy is diverse, with sectors such as finance, manufacturing, and entertainment playing significant roles.

Mumbai is a cultural hub, with a vibrant theatre scene and a thriving film industry known as Bollywood. The city is also home to numerous museums, art galleries, and cultural festivals. Mumbai's cuisine is a blend of traditional Maharashtrian cuisine, street food, and dishes from various regions of India.

Infrastructure[edit | edit source]

Mumbai's infrastructure includes an extensive public transport system, consisting of buses, trains, and the Mumbai Metro. The city is served by the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, one of the busiest airports in India. Mumbai also has a significant road network, including the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the first controlled-access toll road in India.
