Indocin

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Indocin (also known as Indomethacin) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces inflammation and pain in the body. It is used to treat moderate to severe osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It is also used to treat shoulder pain caused by bursitis or tendinitis.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Indocin is used to relieve pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis, gout, bursitis, and tendonitis. It is also used to treat pain in the shoulder caused by bursitis or tendinitis.

How it works[edit | edit source]

Indocin works by reducing the production of prostaglandins, chemicals that cells produce in response to injury and certain diseases. Prostaglandins cause pain and inflammation. By reducing the levels of prostaglandins, Indocin helps to reduce inflammation and pain.

Side effects[edit | edit source]

Like all NSAIDs, Indocin can cause side effects. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, decreased appetite, rash, dizziness, headache, and drowsiness. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before taking Indocin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to aspirin or other NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Dosage[edit | edit source]

The dosage of Indocin is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. In adults, the maximum recommended daily dose is 200 milligrams.

Overdose[edit | edit source]
