Infante Gabriel of Spain (Gabriel Antonio Francisco Javier Juan Nepomuceno José Serafín Pascual Salvador; 12 May 1752 – 23 November 1788) was a member of the Spanish royal family and a son of King Charles III of Spain and his wife, Maria Amalia of Saxony. He was an Infante of Spain by birth.
Early life[edit | edit source]
Infante Gabriel was born at the Royal Alcázar of Madrid in Madrid, Spain. He was the fourth son of Charles III of Spain and Maria Amalia of Saxony. His early education was supervised by his father, who ensured that Gabriel received a comprehensive education in the arts, sciences, and languages.
Marriage and issue[edit | edit source]
In 1785, Infante Gabriel married Infanta Mariana Victoria of Portugal, the daughter of Maria I of Portugal and Peter III of Portugal. The couple had three children:
- Infante Pedro Carlos of Spain and Portugal (1786–1812)
- Infanta Maria Carlota of Spain (1787–1787)
- Infante Carlos of Spain (1788–1788)
Death[edit | edit source]
Infante Gabriel died on 23 November 1788 at the age of 36 at El Escorial in Spain. He succumbed to smallpox, a common and often deadly disease at the time. He was buried at El Escorial, the historical residence of the King of Spain.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Infante Gabriel is remembered for his intellectual pursuits and contributions to the cultural life of the Spanish court. His marriage to Infanta Mariana Victoria of Portugal strengthened the ties between the Spanish and Portuguese royal families.
