Isaac Van Zandt
Isaac Van Zandt (July 10, 1813 – October 11, 1847) was an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat who played a significant role in the early history of the Republic of Texas. He is best known for his efforts in the annexation of Texas to the United States.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Isaac Van Zandt was born on July 10, 1813, in Franklin County, Tennessee. He was the son of Jacob Van Zandt and Mary Isaacs. Van Zandt received his early education in Tennessee before studying law.

Legal and Political Career[edit | edit source]
Van Zandt began his career as a lawyer in Tennessee. In 1838, he moved to the Republic of Texas and settled in Elysian Fields, where he continued his legal practice. He quickly became involved in the political affairs of the young republic.
In 1840, Van Zandt was elected to the Texas House of Representatives, where he served until 1842. During his tenure, he was a strong advocate for the annexation of Texas to the United States.
Diplomatic Service[edit | edit source]
In 1842, President Sam Houston appointed Van Zandt as the chargé d'affaires to the United States. In this role, Van Zandt worked tirelessly to promote the annexation of Texas. He negotiated with U.S. officials and played a key role in the eventual annexation of Texas in 1845.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Isaac Van Zandt married Frances Cooke Lipscomb in 1833. The couple had several children, including Khleber Miller Van Zandt, who would later become a prominent banker and politician in Texas.
Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]
Isaac Van Zandt died on October 11, 1847, in Houston, Texas, from yellow fever. He is buried in the Old City Cemetery in Houston.
Van Zandt County, Texas, is named in his honor, recognizing his contributions to the state and his efforts in the annexation process.
