Jim Backus (February 25, 1913 – July 3, 1989) was an American actor and voice actor. He is best known for his roles as Thurston Howell III on the television sitcom Gilligan's Island and as the voice of the nearsighted cartoon character Mr. Magoo.

Jim Backus was born James Gilmore Backus in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the son of Russell Gould Backus and Daisy Taylor Backus. He attended Shaker Heights High School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and later studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.

Backus began his career in radio, where he became known for his comedic timing and distinctive voice. He transitioned to film and television in the 1940s and 1950s.

Radio[edit | edit source]

In radio, Backus was a regular on The Alan Young Show and The Jack Benny Program. He also had his own show, The Jim Backus Show, which showcased his comedic talents.

Backus appeared in numerous films, including Rebel Without a Cause (1955), where he played James Dean's father. He also appeared in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) and The Great Lover (1949).
