Jodi Nunnari is an American cell biologist known for her pioneering research on the mitochondria, the energy-producing organelles within cells. She is a professor and chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis.

Education and Career[edit | edit source]

Nunnari received her B.S. degree in chemistry from The College of Wooster and her Ph.D. in pharmacology from Vanderbilt University. She completed her postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco, where she began her research on mitochondrial dynamics.

Nunnari joined the faculty at the University of California, Davis in 1996. She has served as the chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology since 2016.

Research[edit | edit source]

Nunnari's research focuses on the mitochondria, particularly their dynamics, biogenesis, and function. Her work has significantly advanced the understanding of how mitochondria divide, fuse, and interact with other cellular components. She has utilized advanced imaging techniques and molecular biology to uncover the mechanisms underlying mitochondrial behavior and their implications for cell biology and disease.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

Nunnari has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to cell biology, including:

Editorial Work[edit | edit source]

Nunnari is the editor-in-chief of the journal The Journal of Cell Biology, where she oversees the publication of significant research in the field of cell biology.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Nunnari is married to fellow scientist Jonathan Weissman, a prominent researcher in the field of molecular biology.
