Joel B. Sutherland

Joel B. Sutherland (1792 – 1861) was an American politician and physician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Joel Barlow Sutherland was born on February 26, 1792, in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He pursued classical studies and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1812. He studied medicine and commenced practice in Philadelphia.

Military Service[edit | edit source]

During the War of 1812, Sutherland served as a surgeon in the United States Army. He was later promoted to the rank of major and served as a paymaster.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Sutherland was elected as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1813 to 1816. He served in the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1816 to 1820. He was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-first and the four succeeding Congresses, serving from March 4, 1827, to March 3, 1837. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1836 to the Twenty-fifth Congress.

Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]

After his political career, Sutherland resumed the practice of medicine. He was also involved in various business ventures. Joel B. Sutherland died on November 15, 1861, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was interred in Monument Cemetery.

Sutherland's contributions to both medicine and politics are remembered in Pennsylvania history. His service during the War of 1812 and his multiple terms in Congress highlight his dedication to public service.
