John Strother Griffin
John Strother Griffin (1816–1898) was an American physician and a prominent figure in the early history of Los Angeles, California. He played a significant role in the development of the city's medical infrastructure and was instrumental in the establishment of several key institutions.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Griffin was born on June 25, 1816, in Falmouth, Virginia. He pursued his medical education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with a degree in medicine in 1837. Following his graduation, Griffin served as an assistant surgeon in the United States Army.
Military Career[edit | edit source]
During the Mexican-American War, Griffin was stationed in California and served as a surgeon with the Army of the West. His service in the war brought him to the region that would later become his home.
Contribution to Los Angeles[edit | edit source]
After the war, Griffin decided to settle in Los Angeles, where he became one of the city's first resident physicians. He was a key figure in the establishment of the city's medical community and was involved in the founding of the Los Angeles County Medical Association.
Griffin also played a significant role in the development of the city's infrastructure. He was a major investor in the Los Angeles and San Pedro Railroad, which was the first railroad in Southern California. His investments and efforts helped to stimulate the growth and development of Los Angeles during the late 19th century.

Griffin married Louisa Hayes in 1852, and the couple had several children. He was known for his philanthropy and community involvement, contributing to various civic projects and charitable causes.
