Jon Kabat-Zinn (born Jon Kabat, June 5, 1944) is an American professor emeritus of medicine and the creator of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is also the founder and former executive director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts. Kabat-Zinn is best known for his work in developing the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program and for his contributions to the field of mindfulness in the Western context. His work has been influential in integrating mindfulness with clinical psychology and psychiatry, as well as offering a novel approach to health care.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Jon Kabat-Zinn was born in New York City in 1944 to Elvin Kabat, a biomedical scientist, and Sally Kabat, a painter. He graduated from Haverford College in 1964 with a degree in molecular biology. After a period of working in the field of molecular biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Kabat-Zinn became interested in the potential of meditation and mindfulness practices. This interest led him to study meditation with Buddhist teachers such as Thich Nhat Hanh and Seung Sahn and to eventually pursue training in Buddhism and yoga.

In 1979, Kabat-Zinn founded the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he adapted Buddhist teachings on mindfulness and developed the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program. This program was revolutionary in its approach to treating patients with chronic pain and stress-related disorders, which were often difficult to manage through traditional medical practices alone.

Kabat-Zinn's work has significantly contributed to the acceptance and integration of mindfulness practices into the mainstream of medicine and society.
