Joseon Dynasty

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Joseon Dynasty (also known as Chosŏn or Chosun) was a Korean dynastic kingdom that lasted for approximately five centuries. It was founded by Yi Seong-gye in July 1392 and was replaced by the Korean Empire in October 1897. The Joseon Dynasty is considered the longest single dynasty in world history.

History[edit | edit source]

The Joseon Dynasty was established by Yi Seong-gye, a general who dethroned King Gongyang of Goryeo. Yi Seong-gye declared a new dynasty in 1392–1393 under the name of Joseon, thereby reviving an older state, also known as Joseon, that was, theoretically, founded nearly three thousand years previously and renamed the country from Goryeo to Joseon.

Culture[edit | edit source]

The Joseon Dynasty is credited with shaping much of Korea's culture, customs, and statecraft that are seen today. The dynasty introduced and spread Confucianism across the peninsula, which became the state ideology. The Joseon Dynasty also saw the creation of Hangul, the Korean alphabet, under King Sejong the Great.

Government[edit | edit source]

The government of the Joseon Dynasty was a form of absolute monarchy, with the king as the ultimate authority. However, there was a significant influence of Confucianism on the government structure, which emphasized a system of meritocracy in the bureaucracy.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The Joseon Dynasty left a significant legacy in Korean history. Its laws, cultural norms, and societal structures have had a profound influence on modern Korea. The dynasty's emphasis on Confucianism and its values have shaped Korean society's outlook on morality, social hierarchy, and duty.
