Joseph DeRisi is an American biochemist and molecular biologist known for his contributions to the field of virology and genomics. He is a professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and co-president of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub.

Joseph DeRisi was born in California. He completed his undergraduate studies in biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He then pursued a Ph.D. in biochemistry at Stanford University, where he worked under the mentorship of Patrick O. Brown.

After completing his Ph.D., DeRisi joined the faculty at UCSF, where he has made significant contributions to the understanding of infectious diseases and the development of microarray technology. His research has focused on the identification and characterization of novel viruses, including the SARS coronavirus.

DeRisi's lab is known for developing innovative techniques to study viral pathogens. One of his notable achievements is the creation of the Virochip, a microarray designed to detect all known viruses. This technology has been instrumental in identifying the SARS coronavirus and other emerging infectious agents.

Chan Zuckerberg Biohub[edit | edit source]

In 2016, DeRisi was appointed co-president of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, a collaborative research initiative aimed at curing, preventing, or managing all diseases by the end of the century. The Biohub brings together scientists from UCSF, Stanford University, and the University of California, Berkeley to work on ambitious biomedical research projects.
