K-pop (an abbreviation of Korean pop) is a genre of popular music originating in South Korea. It is characterized by a wide variety of audiovisual elements. Although it includes all genres of "popular music" within South Korea, the term is more often used in a narrower sense to describe a modern form of South Korean pop music drawing on a range of styles and genres from around the world, such as pop, hip hop, R&B, experimental, rock, jazz, gospel, reggae, electronic dance, folk, country, and classical on top of its traditional Korean music roots.

History[edit | edit source]

K-pop's origins can be traced back to the early 1990s with the emergence of Seo Taiji and Boys, who are considered the first K-pop group. Their experimentation with different musical styles and integration of foreign musical elements set the stage for the genre's development. The late 1990s saw the rise of the first generation of K-pop idols, including groups like H.O.T., Sechs Kies, and S.E.S..

The 2000s marked the beginning of the second generation of K-pop, with groups such as TVXQ, Super Junior, Big Bang, Girls' Generation, and Wonder Girls gaining international popularity. The third generation, starting in the early 2010s, saw the global rise of groups like BTS, EXO, Blackpink, and Twice.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

K-pop is known for its use of synchronized dance routines, elaborate music videos, and a strong emphasis on visual appeal. The genre often features a blend of Korean and English lyrics, making it accessible to a global audience. K-pop idols undergo rigorous training in singing, dancing, and acting, often starting from a young age.

Industry[edit | edit source]

The K-pop industry is dominated by a few major entertainment companies, including SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and Big Hit Entertainment. These companies are responsible for scouting, training, and managing K-pop idols. The industry is known for its highly competitive nature and the intense pressure placed on idols to maintain a perfect image.

Global Impact[edit | edit source]

K-pop has achieved significant global success, particularly in the 2010s and 2020s. Groups like BTS and Blackpink have broken numerous records on international music charts, including the Billboard Hot 100. K-pop has also influenced global fashion, beauty trends, and has a massive presence on social media platforms like YouTube and Instagram.
