Katherine Shindle (born January 31, 1977) is an American actress, singer, dancer, and author. She is best known for being crowned Miss America in 1998 and for her work on Broadway.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Katherine Renee Shindle was born in Toledo, Ohio, and raised in Brigantine, New Jersey. She attended Northwestern University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in theatre.

Miss America 1998[edit | edit source]

Shindle was crowned Miss America 1998 on September 13, 1997. During her reign, she advocated for HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, which was her platform issue. She traveled extensively, speaking at schools, conferences, and other events to promote her cause.

Broadway Career[edit | edit source]

After her tenure as Miss America, Shindle pursued a career in musical theatre. She made her Broadway debut in the 1999 revival of Jekyll & Hyde. She has since appeared in several other Broadway productions, including:

In 2014, Shindle published her memoir, Being Miss America: Behind the Rhinestone Curtain, which provides an insider's look at the Miss America Organization and her experiences during her reign.

Shindle has been an outspoken advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness, LGBT rights, and performers' rights. She has served as the president of Actors' Equity Association, the labor union representing American actors and stage managers in the theatre.

In addition to her stage work, Shindle has appeared in various television shows and films. Her credits include guest appearances on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and The Good Wife.
