From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Kelly Metcalfe is a Canadian researcher and professor known for her work in the field of breast cancer genetics. She is a faculty member at the University of Toronto and a senior scientist at the Women's College Research Institute.

Education[edit | edit source]

Kelly Metcalfe completed her undergraduate studies in nursing at the University of Western Ontario. She then pursued a Master of Science in nursing at the University of Toronto, followed by a PhD in nursing science at the same institution.

Research[edit | edit source]

Metcalfe's research primarily focuses on the genetic aspects of breast cancer, particularly in individuals with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. Her work aims to improve the understanding of genetic predisposition to breast cancer and to develop strategies for risk reduction and management of the disease.

BRCA1 and BRCA2[edit | edit source]

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are genes that produce proteins responsible for repairing DNA damage. Mutations in these genes can lead to an increased risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. Metcalfe's research has contributed to the understanding of how these mutations affect cancer risk and the effectiveness of various preventive measures.

Preventive Measures[edit | edit source]

Metcalfe has studied the impact of prophylactic mastectomy and oophorectomy in reducing cancer risk among women with BRCA mutations. Her findings have been influential in guiding clinical recommendations for risk management in high-risk populations.

Awards and Recognition[edit | edit source]

Kelly Metcalfe has received numerous awards for her contributions to breast cancer research, including recognition from the Canadian Cancer Society and the American Association for Cancer Research.
