Ketchikan
Ketchikan is a city in the United States, located in the state of Alaska. It is the southeasternmost city in Alaska, with a population of approximately 8,000 people. Ketchikan is known for its rich Native American history, its thriving salmon industry, and its beautiful natural scenery, including the Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the United States.
History[edit | edit source]
Ketchikan's history dates back thousands of years, when it was first inhabited by the Tlingit people. The city's name comes from the Tlingit name for the creek that flows through the town, which translates to "Thundering Wings of an Eagle." In the late 19th century, Ketchikan became a supply base for miners during the Klondike Gold Rush. The city was officially incorporated in 1900.
Healthcare[edit | edit source]
Ketchikan is home to the PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center, a critical access hospital that provides healthcare services to the city and surrounding areas. The hospital offers a range of services, including emergency medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, and radiology. It also has a cancer care center and a rehabilitation center.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Ketchikan is largely based on tourism, fishing, and forestry. The city is a popular stop for cruise ships, and tourists are drawn to its beautiful scenery, wildlife, and cultural attractions. The fishing industry is centered around salmon, halibut, and crab, and the city is known as the "Salmon Capital of the World." The forestry industry is supported by the nearby Tongass National Forest.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Ketchikan has a rich cultural heritage, with a strong presence of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures. The city is home to the Totem Heritage Center, which houses one of the largest collections of totem poles in the world. Ketchikan also hosts the annual Alaska Hummingbird Festival, which celebrates the return of migratory birds to the region.
