Kingstree is a town in Williamsburg County, South Carolina, United States. It is the county seat of Williamsburg County. The population was 3,185 at the 2020 census.
History[edit | edit source]
Kingstree was established in 1732 as a settlement for Scottish immigrants. The town's name is derived from the "King's Tree," a large white pine that was marked by early surveyors as the property of the King of England. The tree was located on the banks of the Black River.
During the American Revolutionary War, Kingstree was a site of significant activity. The town was a center for Patriot forces, and several skirmishes occurred in the area. The Battle of Kingstree was one of the notable engagements.

. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.3 km²), all of it land. The town is situated along the Black River, which provides opportunities for fishing and boating.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2020 census, there were 3,185 people, 1,200 households, and 800 families residing in the town. The population density was 995.3 people per square mile (384.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 67.5% African American, 30.2% White, and 2.3% from other races.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Kingstree is primarily based on agriculture, with tobacco, cotton, and soybeans being the main crops. The town also has a number of small businesses and industries, including manufacturing and retail.
Education[edit | edit source]
Kingstree is served by the Williamsburg County School District. The town has several public schools, including Kingstree Senior High School, Kingstree Middle School, and Kingstree Elementary School. There are also private educational institutions in the area.
