From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Kivalina is a village located in the Northwest Arctic Borough in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is situated on the Kivalina Lagoon, just off the Chukchi Sea. The village is known for its unique geographical location and the health challenges faced by its residents due to climate change and other environmental factors.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Kivalina is located at 67°43′32″N 164°32′9″W. The village is situated on a barrier island that is 27 km (17 mi) from the mouth of the Kivalina River. It lies 130 km (80 mi) northwest of Kotzebue. The island is threatened by increasing erosion due to climate change, with the village expected to be inundated by 2025.

Health Challenges[edit | edit source]

The residents of Kivalina face numerous health challenges. The most significant of these is the lack of access to clean water and sanitation facilities. This has led to a high prevalence of respiratory diseases and skin infections. The village also faces food security issues due to the changing climate and the impact on traditional hunting and fishing practices.

Climate Change Impact[edit | edit source]

Kivalina is one of the most visible and dramatic examples of the impact of climate change on small communities. The melting of sea ice has led to increased coastal erosion, threatening the village's existence. The residents of Kivalina are considered climate change refugees, as they are forced to relocate due to the changing environment.

Relocation Efforts[edit | edit source]

Efforts to relocate Kivalina have been ongoing for several years. However, these efforts have been hampered by a lack of funding and logistical challenges. The estimated cost of relocation is between $100 million and $400 million. The residents of Kivalina continue to advocate for their right to a safe and sustainable environment.
