L-type refers to a class of voltage-gated calcium channels. These channels are responsible for the excitation-contraction coupling of skeletal, smooth, cardiac muscle, and for aldosterone secretion in adrenal cortex.

L-type calcium channels are responsible for the excitation-contraction coupling of skeletal, smooth, cardiac muscle, and for aldosterone secretion in adrenal cortex. They are also found in neurons and other cell types. They are so named because the current passing through them is long lasting.

Structure[edit | edit source]

L-type calcium channels belong to the 'high-voltage activated' (HVA) group and are activated by strong depolarizations. The α1 subunit forms the ion pore while the associated subunits have several functions including modulation of gating.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Mutations in the genes encoding the α1 subunit of these channels have been associated with inherited cardiac disorders such as Brugada syndrome and Long QT syndrome.
