LIN28B (gene)
LIN28B is a gene that in humans is encoded by the LIN28B gene. It is a member of the LIN28 family of genes, which are involved in developmental timing and cell fate specification. The LIN28B gene is located on chromosome 6 in humans.
Function[edit | edit source]
The LIN28B gene encodes a protein that is involved in the regulation of stem cell maintenance and cell differentiation. It acts by binding to microRNAs, small RNA molecules that regulate gene expression, and preventing their maturation. This allows the LIN28B protein to control the expression of a wide range of genes, influencing cell fate decisions.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Mutations in the LIN28B gene have been associated with a variety of diseases, including cancer. Overexpression of LIN28B has been observed in several types of cancer, including hepatocellular carcinoma, neuroblastoma, and Wilms' tumor. It is thought that the gene's role in stem cell maintenance and cell differentiation may contribute to the development of these cancers.
Research[edit | edit source]
Research into the LIN28B gene and its associated protein is ongoing. Studies have suggested that the gene may play a role in aging and longevity, as well as in the development of obesity. Further research is needed to fully understand the gene's functions and potential applications in medicine.
