LRP1B

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

LRP1B (Low-Density Lipoprotein Receptor-Related Protein 1B) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the LRP1B gene. It is a member of the LDL receptor family, which plays a critical role in the metabolism of lipoproteins and protection against atherosclerosis.

Function[edit | edit source]

LRP1B is involved in endocytosis, but its function is not yet fully understood. It is known to bind and internalize ligands in the process of receptor-mediated endocytosis and to play a critical role in the migration of neurons during development.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Mutations in the LRP1B gene have been associated with obesity and a higher risk of cancer, particularly lung and oral cancers. It is also considered a tumor suppressor gene, as its loss of function can lead to increased cell proliferation and cancer progression.
