Lanproston

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Lanproston is a synthetic prostaglandin analog used primarily in the field of ophthalmology for the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It functions by reducing intraocular pressure, which is a critical factor in the management of these conditions.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Lanproston works by mimicking the action of naturally occurring prostaglandins in the eye. It binds to the prostaglandin F receptor, leading to increased outflow of aqueous humor through the uveoscleral pathway. This reduction in intraocular pressure helps to prevent damage to the optic nerve, which is crucial in preventing vision loss associated with glaucoma.

Pharmacokinetics[edit | edit source]

Lanproston is administered topically in the form of eye drops. Upon administration, it is absorbed through the cornea and reaches the anterior chamber of the eye. The drug is metabolized locally in the eye, and its metabolites are excreted through the kidneys. The elimination half-life of Lanproston is relatively short, necessitating once-daily dosing.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Lanproston is indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It is often used as a first-line treatment due to its efficacy and safety profile. The typical dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Lanproston include:

  • Conjunctival hyperemia (redness of the eye)
  • Eye irritation
  • Changes in eyelash growth
  • Darkening of the iris

Rare but serious side effects may include:

  • Macular edema
  • Uveitis

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Lanproston is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to prostaglandins or any component of the formulation. Caution is advised in patients with a history of intraocular inflammation or macular edema.

Research and Development[edit | edit source]

Ongoing research is exploring the potential of Lanproston in combination therapies for enhanced efficacy in lowering intraocular pressure. Studies are also investigating its long-term safety profile and effects on ocular tissues.
