American physiologist and surgeon

Lester Dragstedt

Lester Reynold Dragstedt (October 2, 1893 – July 16, 1975) was a prominent American physiologist and surgeon known for his pioneering work in the field of gastroenterology. His research significantly advanced the understanding of the digestive system and led to the development of surgical techniques that improved the treatment of peptic ulcer disease.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Lester Dragstedt was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and demonstrated an early interest in the sciences. He pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Iowa, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. Dragstedt continued his education at the University of Chicago, obtaining his medical degree in 1920. His academic journey was marked by a keen interest in physiology and surgery, which would later define his career.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his medical degree, Dragstedt joined the faculty at the University of Chicago, where he began his groundbreaking research on the vagus nerve and its role in gastric secretion. His work in this area led to the development of the surgical procedure known as vagotomy, which involves cutting the vagus nerve to reduce acid secretion in the stomach, thereby treating peptic ulcers.

Dragstedt's research extended beyond vagotomy. He explored the physiological mechanisms of gastric acid production and the role of hormones in the digestive process. His contributions to the understanding of endocrinology and neurophysiology were significant, influencing both clinical practice and further research in these fields.

Contributions to medicine[edit | edit source]

Dragstedt's most notable contribution to medicine was the development of the selective vagotomy procedure. This technique revolutionized the treatment of peptic ulcer disease by providing a surgical option that reduced the need for more invasive procedures like gastrectomy. His work laid the foundation for modern surgical approaches to treating gastrointestinal disorders.

In addition to his surgical innovations, Dragstedt was a prolific researcher and author, publishing numerous articles on topics related to physiology and surgery. His work earned him recognition and accolades from the medical community, including leadership roles in various professional organizations.

Later life and legacy[edit | edit source]

Lester Dragstedt retired from active practice in the 1960s but continued to contribute to the field through teaching and mentorship. He passed away on July 16, 1975, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and excellence in medical research and education.

Dragstedt's influence is still felt today, as his techniques and discoveries continue to inform modern medical practices. His dedication to understanding the complexities of the human body and improving patient care remains an inspiration to medical professionals and researchers.
