Lhuntse District

Lhuntse District is one of the 20 districts of Bhutan. It is located in the northeastern part of the country and is known for its rich cultural heritage and scenic landscapes. The district is bordered by Mongar District to the south, Trashiyangtse District to the east, and Tibet to the north.

Geography

Lhuntse District is characterized by its mountainous terrain, with elevations ranging from 600 meters to over 5,000 meters above sea level. The Kuri Chhu river flows through the district, providing water resources for agriculture and hydropower.

Administrative Divisions

Lhuntse District is divided into eight gewogs (village blocks):

• Khoma Gewog
• Kurtoe Gewog
• Maedtsho Gewog
• Menbi Gewog
• Minjey Gewog
• Tsenkhar Gewog

The district's administrative center is located in Lhuntse.

Culture

Lhuntse District is renowned for its traditional Bhutanese culture, including the art of weaving. The district is famous for producing some of the finest kiras and ghos, which are traditional Bhutanese garments. The Khoma village is particularly well-known for its intricate weaving techniques.

Religion

The district is home to several important Buddhist monasteries and temples. The most notable is the Lhuntse Dzong, a fortress-monastery that serves as the religious and administrative center of the district. Other significant religious sites include the Dungkar Nagtshang and the Kilung Lhakhang.

Economy

The economy of Lhuntse District is primarily based on agriculture, with the majority of the population engaged in farming. Major crops include rice, maize, and potatoes. The district also has potential for hydropower development due to its abundant water resources.

Transportation

Lhuntse District is connected to the rest of Bhutan by a network of roads. The main highway linking the district to other parts of the country is the Lhuntse-Mongar Highway. Public transportation services are available, but the rugged terrain can make travel challenging.
