Ligusticum wallichii

Ligusticum wallichii is a species of plant in the family Apiaceae, native to the mountainous regions of South Asia. It is commonly known as Chinese lovage or Szechuan lovage.

Ligusticum wallichii is a perennial herb that grows up to 2 meters in height. It has a thick, cylindrical rootstock and hollow, ribbed stems. The leaves are pinnate, with 9-11 leaflets, and the flowers are small, white, and arranged in umbels.

Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]

Ligusticum wallichii is native to the Himalayas, and is found in India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. It grows in moist, shady places at altitudes of 3000-4000 meters.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Ligusticum wallichii is used in traditional Chinese medicine for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and sedative properties. The root, known as chuanxiong, is used to treat headaches, abdominal pain, and other conditions.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Ligusticum wallichii is cultivated for its root, which is harvested in the autumn. The plant prefers a well-drained soil and a sunny position.

Conservation status[edit | edit source]

Ligusticum wallichii is not currently considered to be at risk of extinction, but its habitat is threatened by deforestation and overharvesting.
