List of United States state legislatures
List of United States state legislatures refers to the legislative bodies within the individual states of the United States. Each state in the United States has a legislature as part of its form of government, which is responsible for making new laws and changing existing laws within the state. The structure, powers, and the names of these legislatures vary from state to state.
Overview[edit | edit source]
In the United States, there are two types of state legislatures: bicameral and unicameral. Bicameral legislatures, which are the most common, consist of two chambers: a lower house (often called the House of Representatives, Assembly, or House of Delegates) and an upper house (usually called the Senate). Nebraska is the only state with a unicameral (single-chamber) legislature, which is officially known as the Nebraska Legislature.
The primary function of state legislatures is to enact state laws, which can cover a wide range of issues including education, transportation, health care, and criminal justice. State legislatures also have the power to levy taxes, appropriate funds, and in some cases, confirm executive appointments.
